Canonical Working on Ubuntu for Tablets

As clearly dictate the title of this article, Canonical is working on the preparation of a version of Ubuntu for tablets, which seeks to further extend its presence in the mobile market. The operating system would be lightweight version of Linux Ubuntu with touch screen support and simplified user interface.

According to Chris Kenyon, Vice President of services for Canonical OEM, “Ubuntu Tablet” is expected in 2011 winter. You may wonder what kind of changes the current Ubuntu will experience to suit a tablet. The answer is Ubuntu Light (Unity), with added support for touch screens.

This could be the first foray of Canonical in the tablet market where it will compete with Google Android, Intel, Nokia, iOS and MeeGo. On this, Kenyon mentions:

We remove the hat to the iPad team to do what they did.

By now the Canonical aims to make Ubuntu an interface that provides access to the most commonly used applications and support for multi touch drivers. On the hardware side, are having talks with manufacturers such as Freescale, Intel, Texas Instruments and Marvell and Pixel Qi. The goal is to run Ubuntu faster with lower power consumption.
