Have you ever imagined a disc with a capacity of 128 GB? Begin to imagine. The Blu-Ray Disc Association (BDA) announced the specifications of the new standard of disks, BDXL. Therefore, manufacturers are now able to start production of new media and also the necessary equipment for playback and recording. There is no official statement to that effect, but the expectation is that the first compatible player will be available in a year or two.

These discs may have three or four layers, which results in a capacity of 100 or 128 GB of storage. The three-tier model will have 100 GB capacity and can be rewritten. Four layers model will have 128 GB capacity, but will not rewritable.

The target of the new model is commercial enterprises such as broadcasters and other medical companies with very large storage needs. For consumers the availability will depend on Blu-Ray recorders in the market of the region concerned. BDXL will be able to reproduce existing disks of 25 and 50 GB, but the opposite is not possible.

Victor Matsuda, Board member of Global Promotions of Blu-Ray Disc Association asserts that professional industries showed interest in optical disks, a technology very well consolidated and accepts as alternatives to magnetic storage.
